Il paese fu fondato da alcuni profughi provenienti da Vaste, che qui si rifugiarono dopo che la città fu distrutta da Guglielmo il Malo nel 1156. Da notare: la trecentesca Cappella di S.Nicola; la Parrocchiale, realizzata in stile neo-gotico tra il 1869 e 1874; il Castello con Torre del XVI sec. Il centro urbano, posto al centro tra Botrugno e San Cassiano, dista 39 Km da Lecce, si può raggiungere in auto da Lecce percorrendo la SS. 275 per S. Maria di Leuca e la S.S.16 per Maglie, oppure da numerose provinciali interne.
