Molto probabilmente il paese fu fondato dai greco-bizantini e subì, durante il medioevo, le devastazioni dei Saraceni. La cittadina presenta numerosi esempi di ville e palazzi tardo ottocenteschi e alcune case a corte. Tra i monumenti degni di nota: il palazzo baronale del XVIII sec.; la Chiesa Madre, realizzata nell'800; l'antico insediamento dell'abbazia di S.Nicola di Macugno, a 3 Km dal centro abitato.
