Il comune è importante per i resti archeologici di epoca messapica. Il paese possiede il cinquecentesco palazzo dei Castromediano (XV-XVI sec.), la chiesa dell'Assunta del 1400, ma rifatta nel XVII e XVIII sec. in forme barocche e la seicentesca chiesa a tre navate del'ex convento di PP. Domenicani. Cavallino diede i natali al grande patriota e archeologo Sigismondo Castromediano e al poeta Giuseppe De Dominicis.
