In base agli importanti rinvenimenti archeologici fatti nei pressi di Isernia, in località La Pineta, si sa che gli uomini hanno abitato queste terre sin da tempi lontanissimi. Anche in città sono presenti antiche tracce che testimoniano la dominazione Romana, la Fontana della Fraterna e la cripta della Cattedrale. Quest'ultima è stata ricostruita nell'ottocento in un rigoroso stile neoclassico.
