Secondo l'UNESCO Ferrara è la città simbolo del Rinascimento per eccellenza, perché a tutt'oggi conserva intatto il patrimonio architettonico che fu donato alla città dalla signoria d'Este in quei tempi. L'esempio più lampante di questa condizione è sicuramente il Castello Estense, circondato ancora da un ampio fossato, a poca distanza la Cattedrale ed il Campanile attribuito a Leon Battista Alberti.
