Una parte della storia di Alessandria è legata alla figura di Napoleone. Fu infatti il grande condottiero a voler una grande piazza d'armi anche a costo di abbattere la vecchia Cattedrale. Questo luogo oggi si chiama Piazza della Libertà e vi si affacciano Palazzo Rosso e lo splendido Palazzo Ghilini. Il nuovo Duomo, ricostruito in stile neoclassico, si trova a poca distanza, come anche i numerosi palazzi gentilizi che dimostrano il nobile retaggio della città.
