Nella grande vallata alpina entro cui scorre l'Adda ed alla confluenza tra questo fiume ed il torrente Mallero sorge Sondrio, capitale della Valtellina. Questa cittadina è ricca di palazzi risalenti ad epoche diverse, come Palazzo Sertoli, Palazzo Carbonera sulla sponda opposta del Mallero, o il palazzo Pretorio in piazza Campello, situato dirimpetto alla Collegiata dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio, il principale luogo di culto cittadino.
